Distal Forearm Workshop Questionnaire Results

The distal forearm workshop (DFW) was the first to be held by the Fractures Working Group (FWG) of the International Osteoporosis Foundation, which is a collaboration with the International Society for Fracture Repair. The FWG's remit is to define and to communicate, to surgeons treating fragility fractures, the best practice in surgery, rehabilitation and secondary prevention.

The format of the workshop was a 24 hr session with its basic goal of stimulating as much discussion as possible. Thus, the typical ISFR workshop style, of every participant giving a presentation followed by discussion, was modified. Discussions were allotted half-hour, initiated by a presentation. The dinner that follwed was also an integral part of the meeting, giving an opportunity for surgeons, scientists and industry representatives to network with each other.

Question 1.
What was the most important issue that you feel was addressed in the DFW? Please rank the following list (1) being the most important and (6) the least important.

Your Response:

_25_ Bone quality

_21_ Inability to restore wrist anatomy

_17_ Surgical techniques

_13_ Outcome assessment

_10_ Secondary prevention

_14_ Quality of Life

* The Scoring System was developed to rate the importance of these issues. The allocation of points was the following: 1st choice- 6 pts, 2nd Choice- 5 pts, 3rd Choice- 4 pts, 4th Choice- 3 pts, 5th Choice- 2 pts, 6th Choice- 1 pt.

Question 2.
If we were to create sub-groups in which basic science projects vs. non-clinical prospective randomized trials were set-up, which area of interest would most suit your present field of specialization? Please be specific clinical/non-clinical bone biology, surgical treatment, etc...

Your Response:

Clinical -50%

Non-Clinical -50%

Surgical Treatment -30%

Question 3.
How do you feel that you could contribute to your "sub-group"?

Your Response:

  • Development of New Product: Bone Density Intra-operative technique
  • Involvement in different trials about Bone Structure Analysis
  • Evaluation of Upper Extremity Scores
  • Provide scientific input to issues related to bone quality, malunion and external fixation hardware (pins)
  • Application of Tissue-engineered new bone formation to bone surgery
  • Patient-linked assessment of muscle function and bone mass
  • Collaboration in International Studies
  • Creating protocols for treatment and outcomes evaluation
  • Contribute to the field of Surgical Treatment
  • Determination of genetic predisposition in patients

Question 4.
Has your opinion changed about any of the issues that were discussed at the workshop? In what way? What questions do you feel you still lack adequate knowledge about?

Your Response:

  • Bone Quality --> Implant Fixation --> Surgical Techniques
  • Distal Radius Fractures --> Quality of Life
  • Pre-disposing factors --> Muscle Strength, Neuromuscular
  • Loss of mobility --> Possibility of adaptation at level of shoulder or other joints

Question 5.
Would you be available for another possible meeting and continuation of this workshop in February in conjunction with the ORS and AAOS meetings in Washington?

Your Response:

Yes - 70%

No- 10%

No Response- 20%

Question 6:
Would you participate in another Distal Forearm Workshop?

Your Response:

Yes- 100%
